Sometimes the motivation just isn’t there, which is understandable, but the best motivation might just be outside your window. When that summer sun starts shining, one of the best ways to enjoy it is by going on a run. Luckily there are plenty of great running trails in Metro Detroit that will give you the inspiration you need to get that run in.
One of the most popular summer spots in Detroit is also a great place to get some miles in. With the beautiful view of the Detroit River and the Dequindre Cut, there’s plenty to see while on your run. Of course, there’s plenty of great events taking place at the Riverfront throughout the summer, including the Detroit Riverfront Run taking place this Saturday, June 8.

The 5.6 mile path around Belle Isle is one of the most scenic routes in Metro Detroit. Between the lush wooded areas, flowing Detroit River, and various paths, there’s no shortage of views along your run. For maps and information on passes and access, be sure to visit the Belle Isle Conservancy website. A beautiful 8.9 mile linear park in Northeast Oakland County, Paint Creek Trail is Michigan’s non-motorized rail-to-trail park. The trail is eight feet wide and takes you through Rochester, Oakland Township, the Village of Lake Orion, and many beautiful scenic routes. There’s different routes for different types of runners, so be sure to check out the different paths on the trail’s website. Following a route that takes you along the Rouge River from Dearborn to Northville, historic Hines Drive always makes for a beautiful 17 mile run. If you’re looking for something a little more demanding, this hilly route can provide an intense workout. Hines Drive is a great run in the summer, but provides even more scenic views in the fall as many of the leaves change colors. A perfect park for any level of runner, Stony Creek Metropark provides plenty of paths to enjoy throughout the summer. The Oakland and Macomb county park features over 4,400 scenic acres, including a 6.2 mile path that weaves in and out of the park.
